When it comes to getting first tattoos, it tends to happen in early adulthood. In fact, a 2015 Harris Poll found that 47% of millennials and 36% of Gen Xers had at least one tattoo. But for Michael J. Fox, best known for Back to the Future, got his first tattoo at a New York City parlor at the age of 57.
Fox visited Bang Bang Tattoo, which is a popular choice for celebrities, including Justin Bieber and Cara Delevigne. The owner of the tattoo shop, Keith ‘Bang Bang’ McCurdy and tattoo artist Mr. K even received a “thank you” gift from the actor — a pair of gray and white Nike Mags sneakers and a hover-board. Both items were inspired by Fox’s Back to the Future character and were even signed.
The tattoo Fox chose consists of a sea turtle swimming through five rings on his forearm. The actor posted a picture of his new ink on Instagram, captioning it with “First tattoo, sea turtle, long story.”
Of course, fans were intrigued and wanted to know more behind the sea turtle story. Fortunately, Fox told the story while getting the tattoo done. According to McCurdy, “He [Fox] was telling me that there was a transformation for him with his career decisions when he was swimming in Saint John. He spotted this turtle with a chunk missing from its fin and a scar on his face. And that turtle let him swim with him for about a half an hour. He made a transcending decision right after that, so that turtle was pretty significant to him.”
So while more than 10,000 people reach the common age of retirement of 65 every day in the U.S., Michael J. Fox continues to make impressive changes in his life, like getting his first tattoo. This is even despite his battle with Parkinson’s disease, which he’s dealt with since 1991. While Parkinson’s causes uncontrollable tremors, McCurdy reported that Fox sat like a champ through the entire tattoo.
Fox’s presence at the tattoo shop certainly did not go unnoticed. Everyone in the shop gathered around to take a peek at his new ink, take some pictures with the actor, and even get some autographs. Everyone at the shop was excited to be able to be a fan for a few minutes.
So Michael J Fox is another great example that age truly is just a number and it’s never too late to get a tattoo.
